ODB-2 is the core developer in the coating of thermal paper. It is colorless itself, but when heated and reacting with a developing acid, it rapidly turns into a dark color (usually black or bluish-black), thus displaying text or patterns on the paper.

 

How ODB-2 Works (Chemical Reaction)

 

The full chemical name of ODB-2 is 2-(phenylamino)-3-methyl-6-diethylaminofluorane. Its molecular structure is stable and colorless at room temperature.

 

1. Heating: When the print head of the thermal printer contacts a specific location on the thermal paper, the temperature at that point rises rapidly (typically above 60°C - 80°C).

 

2. Melting: The heat first melts the sensitizer (wax) in the coating, allowing the colorless dye (ODB-2) and the developer to change from solid particles to a molten state and come into contact with each other.

 

3. Acid-Base Reaction: In the molten state, the developer (acting as an acid) reacts with ODB-2 (acting as a leuco base) in an acid-base chemical reaction.

 

4. Structural Change and Color Development: The molecular structure of ODB-2 undergoes a ring-opening change upon encountering an acid proton, forming an extended conjugated system. This new structure absorbs light in the visible light region, thus producing a deep color (usually black).

 

This process is completed within milliseconds, enabling high-speed printing.

 

Key Characteristics of ODB-2 as a Developer

 

Compared to other earlier or similar colorless dyes, ODB-2 has the following significant advantages, making it one of the most widely used thermal sensitive dyes:

 

High Sensitivity: The color development reaction is very rapid, producing deep colors with high contrast. This means that clear printing results can be achieved with lower print head temperatures or shorter heating times, helping to protect the print head and increase printing speed.

 

Vivid Black: ODB-2 produces very pure, vivid bluish-black to black, providing a good readability experience.

 

Good Stability: Compared to some earlier dyes, images printed with ODB-2 exhibit relatively good stability under normal temperature and light-protected conditions.
