Zinc Stearate Emulsion
When the heating element of the thermal printhead comes into contact with the paper, the heat melts the coating, and the colorless dye and developer react instantly, creating an imprint (usually black or blue) at the corresponding location. In this system, zinc stearate emulsion plays a crucial role as a "physical optimizer." It does not participate in the color-developing chemical reaction itself, but its physical properties greatly improve the coating's performance and print quality. Its main functions are as follows:
1. As a lubricant and anti-adhesion agent. This is its most core and primary function.
• Protecting the printhead: The thermal printhead is a very precise component that rubs directly against the paper surface at high speed. Without a lubricating layer, the friction would be very high, not only wearing down the printhead and shortening its lifespan, but also potentially causing unclear printing or paper jams.
• Preventing paper sticking: The thermal coating has a certain degree of stickiness after melting when heated. Zinc stearate forms a smooth film on the coating surface, effectively preventing the molten coating from sticking to the printhead, avoiding printhead contamination and printing defects (such as trailing or smudges). • Reduced friction noise: Makes the printing process smoother and quieter.
2. As a release agent and physical color development promoter
• Physical release: Within the coating, the tiny particles of zinc stearate can be evenly distributed between the colorless dye and the color developer, acting as a physical barrier at room temperature to prevent them from reacting prematurely. This improves the storage stability of thermal paper and avoids background haze or yellowing under natural conditions (such as high temperature and pressure).
• Optimized heat conduction and melting: When the printhead heats up, the zinc stearate particles themselves melt and soften. This process helps the coating melt more evenly and quickly, ensuring that the colorless dye and color developer can fully and quickly contact and react, resulting in a clearer, higher-contrast print.
3. As a sensitizer
• Reduced activation energy: The addition of zinc stearate reduces the energy required for the overall melting of the coating to a certain extent. This means the printhead can achieve good color development at relatively low temperatures or with shorter heating times, thereby increasing printing speed, reducing printhead energy consumption, and further protecting the printhead from damage caused by prolonged high-temperature operation.
4. Improved Coating Performance
• Enhanced Smoothness and Uniformity: Zinc stearate emulsion, as a coating additive, improves the leveling properties of the coating liquid, resulting in a smoother and more even coating. This not only benefits printing but also improves the paper's feel.
• Increased Coating Strength: It can also improve the coating's strength and abrasion resistance to a certain extent, reducing accidental color development caused by scratches during transportation and use.
